The N.E.W. Program Aftercare Program & LifeStyle Management Program

After your surgical weight loss procedure, The NEW Program weight loss specialist are committed to life-long follow-up of your surgery. This is in the form of support groups, post-operative follow-up, newsletters, tips-of-the-week, and availability of your surgeon, our bariatric internist and our psychologist.

Support Groups
We have monthly support group meetings at Community Hospital of Long Beach. Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of every month. To learn more about our support group schedule, call our Surgical Weight Loss Coordinators at 800.964.0525.

Post-Operative Care
After the gastric bypass, we will have a planned follow-up: 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months and then annually after your operation.

After a gastric banding procedure (LAPBAND or REALIZE) , we will plan on having your first visit one week after your surgery. The first adjustment to the band occurs on the 6 week post-operative visit. This allows time for the band to scar in place and to minimize the chance of the band slipping out of position. Subsequent visits depend on your weight loss. At a minimum, we want you to follow-up with our program every three months during the first year of surgery. However, some patients may require visits every two weeks until the band is appropriately adjusted. The average patient undergoes four adjustments until the ideal tightness is established. The band generally requires adjustments when patients are feeling hungry, not losing weight and not having satiety early after eating. Sometimes the band is too tight and fluid needs to be removed from the band. Patients whose band is too tight are unable to eat any solid foods.

Psychological Support
Change is stressful - even if that change is good. Losing significant weight can cause jealousy in your relationships with friends and family and depression may occur in patients that have difficulty adapting to the major change in their appearance and health. Our dedicated bariatric psychologist is available for consultations in helping our patients deal with stressors that are common.

 LifeStyle Management Program

This program is short and focused. It is not for people that need to establish a completely new lifestyle from scratch, but instead, it helps our clients who already know what lifestyle they want to get back there quickly. This program, led by the same team of focused experts, still focuses on maximizing weight loss and improving that patient’s quality of life.

At The NEW Program, we believe that bariatric surgery itself is not a complete solution to obesity; it is a starting point. Without ongoing support, education, and motivation, even the most state-of-the-art surgery may not result in permanent weight loss. Fortunately, we offer a comprehensive after-care program unlike any other in Southern California. No matter which surgery you choose, your after-care program will empower you to make the choices that will give you the best results possible.

Our LifeStyle Management Program is the core of our after-care programs. Here you will attend workshops, exercise groups, support groups and webinars, delivered by our surgeons, bariatric internists, psychologists, Registered Dietitian, and exercise trainers. These dynamic sessions make you an active participant in your care and are one of the keys to your success

Platinum Surgical Program
This 6-month program is the most complete after-care program available. You will have the tools you need to not only follow our post-surgical recommendations during the program, but incorporate them into your lifestyle permanently.

Tune-Up Program
This 8-week program will get you back on track if bariatric surgery did not result in lasting weight loss for you. This is an intense program that addresses any medical or behavioral issues that may have caused you to regain weight, and teaches you to incorporate a realistic way of eating and exercising that you can sustain. If you are having a revision surgery or procedure to modify your original bariatric surgery, the Tune-Up Program is a necessary component of your after-care.

As a successful NEW. Program client, you identify a new lifestyle that results in a healthier, stable weight and a better quality of life. And, as everyone that maintains a stable healthy weight knows, maintaining this lifestyle takes some effort.

Sometimes a person will be doing well, and then for some reason they lose their consistency and begin to regain weight, or they stop progressing toward their goal. If this has happened to you, it’s important to recognize it and to get back on track as soon as possible, The Tune-up Program is designed specifically to help you get back on track quickly, and to resume the lifestyle you enjoy.
