What does weight loss surgery cost?

Typically, our Bariatric Program Coordinators are asked what does weight loss surgery cost and is there a differential in cost between the gastric bypass procedure and gastric banding surgery. The simple answer is, yes. The Gastric Bypass requires an overnight hospital stay, whereas the Lap-Band® System and Realize Personal Banding System do not require an overnight stay and for most of our patients the actual operating time is less.

The NEW Program is highly competitive with other Southern California bariatric surgical programs. How can I pay for weight loss surgery?

Insurance Options

Today, many health plans cover the cost of bariatric surgery, as morbid obesity is a life-threatening disease. Health plan policies and benefits vary and many have certain criteria that need to be met before you can actually have the surgery. And in some cases, your insurance plan may not cover weight loss surgery. They may issue a “denial” to your “prior authorization request.” Some denials may be appealed, depending on the health plan. Be sure to verify your insurance coverage for bariatric surgery.

The “authorization process” typically asks that you verify the medical necessity of your weight loss surgery for obesity. Your primary care doctor can help you establish this by documenting that some or all of the following symptoms and problems apply to you:

You are morbidly obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
You have suffered from morbid obesity for at least the past five years.
You have attempted weight loss methods for at least two years.
You have co-morbidities – such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, degenerative arthritis, and heart disease.
You do not have major psychiatric or emotional problems.
