CEOs’ Top Health Priority: Obesity
Posted by Jacob Goldstein
The uninsured, tort reform and the nursing shortage? Yeah, they matter. But obesity matters a lot more.
That was the conclusion a bunch of CEOs reached today, in a meeting where they hashed out what they thought the president-elect’s top health priorities should be.
The looming disease burden associated with the epidemic, and all the costs and suffering it will entail, apparently pushed it ahead of other, frequently discussed health-reform issues.
The group — which included the CEOs of Pfizer, Novartis, WellPoint and the Mayo Clinic, among others — is part of the WSJ CEO Council, a conference the Journal convened in DC this week.
Second on the group’s list was tort reform (not surprising for a bunch of CEOs). Then came a couple of related priorities beloved of health wonks these days — measuring outcomes in health care, and reforming payments in order to reward good care and stop paying doctors simply based on volume.
Building the supply of nurses and primary-care docs came next, followed by expanded insurance coverage. The group favored a mandate for insurance — but they said it should be on individuals, not businesses.
