Weight-Loss Surgery: A Cure For Diabetes?

New findings shows gastric bypass surgery isn't just for weight loss anymore, it may also be a cure for Type 2 diabetes even in teenagers. Doctors explain how this drastic weight loss approach may mean some diabetics will never need insulin again. http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/health&id=6577128

As metabolic and bariatric surgeons, Drs. Quebbemann and Braverman are carefully evaluating educational materials and monitoring their patient’s outcome with respect to an elimination of diabetes or a significant reduction of their diabetes medication.

Dr. Brian Quebbemann attended the 1st World Congress on Interventional Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes met in New York this past fall.   This Congress, hosted by Cornell University and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, was truly exciting as new therapies to treat diabetes were discussed with leading endocrinologists, public health policy leaders, surgeons and many others from the US, Italy, Japan, UK, Australia and many other countries.

Dr. Quebbemann attended sessions on, “Bariatric Surgery: Diabetes and Metabolic Outcomes and “Gastrointestinal Surgery to Treat Diabetes in Patients Who Are Not Severely Obese.”  This data reinforced The N.E.W. Programs’ experience with their bariatric patients who have had remission of their diabetes shortly after bariatric surgery.
